2020.08.31 19:44 tweetybird_hashtag Dear you.

To me. When you hear others speak to you in supposed veracity, hear clearly.
More importantly, never lie to yourself. Hide if you must, like you did when your parents from the pulpit told you that beyond the heat death, something far beyond their ken...
that flames and burning and a horrid few final moments would last longer than that, a length beyond the heat death of the universe. In an infinity as the number 8, only now, with their miscegenation, they make me think of their brains.
As hollowed out as the final days of the 88s. Not the movie, the caliber that needed gone. Annihilated, not decimated. Decimation was discipline in the most harsh way to prove final devotion.
They couldn't understand, and your parents hit you, just because your first and most common word was "Why."
Why was it why? Because I asked: If you were born in Israel would you most likely be of that Faith? How about somewhere in Arabia, or the Far East?
I still seek Answers, it's in my literal Nature. I hope that over the years you've learned more about respect than just demanding it because of a simple number.
You see, and I hope others will as well, that age is not wisdom, but with time and a model of cognitive thought, wisdom can be attained, in the best way we know how.
Empirically, in Science, not Napoleonistic megalo-cash-mania, wanting even more, and to kill the planet.
Because he was not Gorbachev. 1991 still rankles harsh to him, doesn't it?
An history rhyming Napolean in reverse. If "let's just move on" were a real, tangible thing, why aren't so many people flying the penultimate NASCAR flag, instead of the battle flag of insurrection red, with a blue X? How will your nation see a much bigger enemy than garbage from before? How do you garbage collect The agent of Chaos?
The ballot box here won't be like who I spoke with a Russian colleague about elections there, when he was fleeing other than hurtful accusations like boastful Ayn Rand. F or P, depending on cyrillic or hellenic or whatever linguistic translation you choose. The man we spoke about? His name was Med-something, but no one else seems to remember. You won't spell it out because you still can't elocute the pronunciation.
Thoughts like these filled your head as a child, and the luftballoons. Your mother called you a stupid kid when she rushed you out of the house as a child.
Are you playing the victim? I think not. Watching a commercial with a certain brand of underwear, I knew the actors had to be casted in some way, with quite a lot of research marketing spam as parodied in Silicon Valley.
However, I can't take my eyes off of beauty on TV, with manscaped aesthetics and adonis belts and well, well filled out just like that underwear commercial.
Just for linguistic aesthetics you like that spelling, for yore of the ae, and the rijndael.
Toodles. Learn well. Read well. Listen even more than you just simply hear.
You, well,
Me.
P.S. -- Scent taught you well in anecdotal and solid data from MHC research. Liking your partner's scent is a real deal. In the strangest Truth most of us have ever seen, let the ballot box decide whether to expatriate. To leave the New Babylon.

Also, was ist zu tun?

Was denken Sie ich gesehen habe?

2020.08.26 16:41 viciouscabaret A year and a day, and moving on.

10+ year pagan STEMinist here. Current practice is more of a focus on mindfulness/meditation with a twist of influence from Hellenic deities.
In my early intro pagan studies when I took a more mystical/spiritual approach to things, I came across the concept of “A year and a day.” I believe the context was that one would commit themselves to a year and a day of pagan study before formally dedicating themself to the craft (I did not do this because I was an impatient teenager). I’ve also heard of a sort of “prelude” to marriage where a couple would join for a year and a day, and after that period they would marry or go their separate ways. Citations needed, don’t have the spoons for that right now.
I was recently reminded of “a year and a day” being a milestone for major decisions and change. There was someone very dear in my life who was one of my best friends. I considered them one of my soulmates. The morning of August 22, 2019 was the last time I saw them in-person. Since then we have had a major falling out and grieving that loss has been a long and arduous process for me. On some level I do still care about them and love them. A few months ago I had a dream where I watched them die and it really shook me. But that doesn’t make me feel any less used and deceived and discarded from past events.
The morning of August 23, 2020 I lit a smudge stick and a candle, deleted the last few photos, and removed them from my social media. It feels like a total separation now. Normally I’m alright with keeping little mementos as a marker of where I’ve been and how I’ve grown, but this isn’t one of those times.
One of my partners is approaching the year and a day mark from a major breakup with a girlfriend of over six years. There are a lot of parallels between our respective losses. He’s been inspired to mark the milestone similarly. We’re planning an evening with a fire and a really good bourbon barrel stout.
Has anyone else here done something special to mark a year and a day of a milestone (happy or sad)? What little rituals have you done?

2020.08.10 20:21 Raging_Tortoise Troubles in the North and South

Map of Expansion

Build-Up to this Post
[M] My claim’s gone through a burst of pretty big expansions recently, but this is the last large one: after this, my borders won’t change much.

The Northern Hellenes

As the Camdavos expanded north, they came into contact with the Kingdom of Myolkos, situated on the Pagasetic Gulf. The gulf provided a natural harbor for inbound merchant vessels, making Myolkos the recipient of a great deal of lucrative trade from both the Mediterranean to the south and the Black Sea to the north. Moreover, Myolkos’ position made it a necessary stop on the land route between Mdavos and the Quvaq. As such, its oligarchs had enriched themselves with foreign luxuries, and its farmers grew strange, blue crops unseen elsewhere in the Hellenic world.
The inhabitants of Myolkos did not take kindly to Camdavos demands for tribute, as well as settlers from the south intruding on their lands. As such, the Kingdom closed and militarized their borders, refusing to pay tribute to the Camdavos or engage in any diplomacy. The First Warrior was outraged: this ban on entry blocked all land-based trade with the Quvaq and other northern Hellenes. It was only a matter of time before war broke out between Mdavos and the Myolkos.
A massive naval confrontation broke out when Myolkos’ archers fired upon a Camdavos merchant galley that had entered their bay in order to take refuge from an ongoing storm. Though the trade vessel quickly turned and left the bay, fourteen sailors died due to enemy fire, as well as from being thrown overboard by violent waves after attempting to sail through the storm. This diplomatic incident was not forgiven, and the Camdavos war fleet sailed directly for the harbor of Myolkos several weeks later.
The northerners were prepared. Knowing that an attack was inbound, the fleet of Myolkos blockaded the Pagasetic Gulf, creating a seemingly impenetrable wooden wall. The First Warrior was forced to think of a creative strategy to defeat his neighbors, and a creative strategy is precisely what he came up with. Lighting five of his own galleys on fire, he ordered slaves to ram them at full speed directly into the blockade. Due to the close proximity of the northerners' vessels, the fires quickly spread, even after the ships initially rammed sank from holes in their hulls. Though the five aforementioned galleys sank as well, fatal damage had been done: sailors and warriors alike leapt overboard, desperately fleeing the inferno engulfing their fleet, where they were shot down mid-swim by Camdavos archers. It was a decisive victory, one that allowed the Camdavos to besiege Myolkos both on land and by sea. The capital city soon fell, and the King of Myolkos was taken prisoner, paraded through the streets of Spathmon and pelted by onlookers with rotten vegetables.
Myolkos crumbled, and its lucrative trade routes, cities, and natural harbors fell to the First Warrior to command. Over the subsequent decades, Camdavos settlers looking to break away from their families’ farms and find their fortunes elsewhere flocked to Myolkos. Many began cultivating andzraul themselves, and the foreign crop soon spread throughout Mdavos.

The Fate of Khirta

See build-up, linked above, for additional context and information.
The death of Prince Mithnas sent shockwaves throughout Khirta. With the help of Mdavos, Mithnas had united his people after centuries of hardship. He had saved the palace-city of Khèrros from disrepair, and had revitalized the Cretan economy by exporting goods to all his neighbors. In short, he had single handedly brought about a renaissance of Cretan glory, but now that he was dead, his whole achievement was in jeopardy.
Mithnas’ only son had died only two years before his father’s passing, poisoned by a vengeful slave. As such, there was no heir to the principality of Crete: no man to command its armies, no leader to fund its building projects, no ruler to direct its merchant fleet. Khirta was on the verge of devolving into pre-Mithnoan anarchy: an island of poor, squabbling towns and villages.
This notion appalled the First Warrior and all the Camdavos. Khirta was one of Mdavos’ most loyal, powerful, and prosperous tributaries. Losing the steady tribute from Crete would irreparably damage the Camdavos treasury, at a time when wealth was all too necessary to fund conquest and build infrastructure across the ever-expanding Hellenic nation. Moreover, if Crete were allowed to slip from Camdavos control, it could be swallowed up by foreign powers: Duwaanchatya, Egypt, the Ionians, or unfriendly O’Manth factions. After having indirectly ruled over the island for the better part of a century, the Camdavos were all too aware of the wealth and power it would give to whomever controlled its cities. Did they really want to give up a commanding position with access to all harbors in the Eastern Mediterranean? Did they want to give up the manpower, income, and trade that came with having Khirta as their tributary? Of course not!
As such, the First Warrior decided to pause his conquest of the mainland, and redirected his energies to Cretan shores. Before any foreign power could intervene, he sent fifteen galleys full of soldiers to Khèrros to restore order, claiming that it was within his rights as Khirta’s overlord to do so (despite there being no clause for such a right in the Treaty of the Acropolis). Several inland cities resisted the occupation, but their small rebelling forces, composed mostly of undisciplined mercenaries, were quickly dispersed.
The First Warrior appointed the Commander of Spthamon, his most loyal subordinate, as the new Prince of Khirta: those who claimed that the transition of power was illegitimate were imprisoned or killed. The Camdavos knew of no source of legitimacy other than Athmo’s will. The Commander ruled with the same efficiency and severity that had characterized Mithnas’ own reign. He ensured that tribute was paid to Mdavos in a timely manner, that the Cretan merchant fleet’s transactions were accounted for, and that all local bureaucrats taxed appropriately, obeyed orders, and kept detailed records. Under his leadership, the Camdavos branch of the Guild of Scribes was expanded to take a prominent role in managing the insular administration.
As time went on, Camdavos military rule over Khirta became the norm, and the troubles of the interregnum faded into a distant memory. The Cretan people grew accustomed to Imdavos rituals, traditions, and culture, and the Peloponnesian dialect of Kwèrawian soon became as widely spoken and understood as the Cretan dialect. Insular instability subsided, and Camdavos troops gradually left their occupying posts. Two decades later, Khirta peacefully entered the Hellenic Union of Mdavos, with its own Commander based in Khèrros, hand-picked by the First Warrior from the local nobility. The Treaty of the Acropolis was revisited to reflect the updated status of Khirta: no longer a tributary, but now an equal partner. The fate of the island was sealed, and now it too could participate in dictating the fate of the Hellenic world.

2020.08.08 02:21 Raging_Tortoise The Neighbors

The Ionians

A new empire was rising on Mdavos’ doorstep. Ormos had long been a target of Camdavos raiders, due to its disorganized, weak, and unprotected nature. As such, when passing merchants en route to Duwaanchatya and would-be raiders noticed large armies protecting Ormos and its surrounding cities, they realized that something had drastically changed. A new power had gained a foothold in Anatolia.
Sentiments among the Camdavos were mixed. Some were angry that these newcomers had deprived them of easy and lucrative raids, but others saw their entry into the Mediterranean world as an opportunity for commerce and a useful partnership. After all, these people were ethnic Hellenes, just like the Camdavos themselves! They spoke a similar language, and worshipped similar gods. In short, their culture and geographic location made them a natural ally and trading partner for Mdavos.
The First Warrior belonged to this latter group. He did not want conflict abroad, especially at this trying time when Mdavos was fighting to conquer the mainland. As such, he dispatched a fleet of eight galleys carrying a delegation of merchants and diplomats to Ormos. Precious commodities, including fine wine, olive oil, painted pottery, jewelry, perfumes, and figs were all offered to the Ionians as gifts and proof of goodwill.
The diplomats requested an audience with Despot Agamemnon, in order to formally introduce themselves and their ruler to the new lords of Ormos. They offered him a defensive Camdavos-Ionian alliance, as well as the promise of free, mutually beneficial trade. Moreover, should Agamemnon accept these offers, the Camdavos would refrain from ever raiding the coasts of Anatolia again.

The Zo'Lith O'Manthi

The “Zo'Lith,” or “Turtle” islanders were Mdavos’ closest neighbors (the island of Andros was only a few hours’ journey away from Euboea and the city-state of Amthèny). As such, the Turtle people soon adopted various elements of Camdavos culture: Hellenic garb, an acquired taste for wine, a fluency in the Kwèrawian language, and in a few, extreme cases, even worship of the Hellenic gods.
The First Warrior was extremely pleased by these developments. Though Mdavos’ relationship with O’Manth had begun with the threat of war, it now looked as though at least one O’Manthi faction was open to peaceful trade and collaboration with the mainland. As such, the King of Mdavos dispatched an emissary to the Zo'Lith to propose and sign the “Treaty of Andros:” a treaty of alliance between Mdavos and the small O’Manthi faction, written on a scroll of papyrus in Kwèrawian (a choice symbolic of the Zo'Lith's Hellenization). The terms of the treaty proposed by the Camdavos were as follows:
1) Mdavos and the Zo'Lith shall come to each other’s financial and military aid if either should be attacked by their neighbors.
2) Mdavos and the Zo'Lith shall pay reduced harbor fees and tariffs in one another’s ports and marketplaces, so that trade shall flourish between them for centuries to come.
3) Mdavos will help the Zo'Lith build a small navy and fund their armies, to ensure the safety and prosperity of their islands.
4) The Zo'Lith shall not form any military alliances with other powers or peoples for the next two hundred years, to ensure that Mdavos-Zo'Lith collaboration is untarnished by external factors.

2020.08.06 02:55 Raging_Tortoise The Freedom of the Waters

Invaders had arrived from the North.. They had attacked the weak islands of the Aegean, slaughtering and enslaving the tributaries of Mdavos that lived there. How… dare they? How dare barbaric heathens enslave faithful, civilized Hellenes, loyal subjects of the most powerful and advanced nation in Greece? Who did they think they were?
And yet, despite this outrage, the First Warrior was forced to look the other way. The conquest of Greece and the subjugation of Crete were both far more pressing matters than the loss of a few admittedly very unproductive tributaries. The Aegean islands boasted few resources and little farmland, so the Camdavos cared little for their capture. However, the foreigners soon began to affect Camdavos affairs in a far more unacceptable way.
As time went on, Camdavos merchants found themselves routinely being stopped by these strange island-dwellers while traveling north to trade with the Quvaq. They demanded tolls. For what? Simply passing through their waters? What made the waters theirs in the first place? Some merchants chose to turn back in order to avoid conflict, while others simply rowed past, often causing arguments and brawls.
Eventually, these nuisances became too great and too numerous for the First Warrior to continue to ignore. Something had to be done about these Island People, and so, on a piece of Egyptian papyrus, he composed an ultimatum. It was sent to the O’Manth along with Hellenic translators, in order to facilitate communication. The ultimatum read as follows:

People of the Aegean Islands,
This message comes from the First Warrior, the ruler of Mdavos. You have repeatedly tried to impose tolls on our galleys, as though you own these waters. Our position is this: the waters cannot be owned. They belong solely to Wos, and not any mortal. You murdered and enslaved our tributaries, and we watched in silence. But this is a step too far.
Our merchants have not interfered in your lands. However, rest assured that our galleys are manned by fifty or more battle-hardened warriors each, and are armed with the very latest naval technology. Though we have never caused (nor wish to cause) you any harm, we most certainly will not hesitate to do so if you attempt to interfere in our trade again.
Free trade is in your interest. Your islands produce little food. The few goods that you do produce, such as iron, Mdavos also has in abundance. You have much to gain and nothing to lose by trading with us. We would be happy to export grain and luxuries to your lands. So why do you seek to obstruct this very same commerce with unreasonable taxation?
This letter is an ultimatum, People of the Aegean. Refrain from intercepting our vessels: accept our offer of friendship. If you do so, we shall be brothers in arms for centuries to come, despite our religious and cultural differences. However, if you do not stop harassing our peaceful merchants, the ships that we send to your islands will no longer be peaceful. If you refuse this proposal or harm the messengers that bear it, all-out war will be upon your lands. The vengeance of Mdavos will be decisive and swift.
Let it be known as well that the Quvaq are also offended by your impediment of trade: they are allies of Mdavos. The same can be said for Cannum, another Camdavos trading partner. Both would join us in this fight: it is one you cannot win.
May Dhepzis, Goddess of Reason, guide your judgement in this matter.

2020.07.25 21:11 StardustFromReinmuth [CLAIM] Naxian League

NAME: de jure Naxian League, colloquial Aegean League
CAPITAL: de jure Naxos, de facto Athens
LANGUAGES: de jure none, de facto recognised Greek, Turkish, Arabic.
MAP
FLAG
Overview
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the highly centralised government of the Hellenic Republic collapsed. A country united by language and culture yet so divided by geography, connections between population centers around Greece were severed as governments and societies fell. Now not being able to rely upon anyone but themselves, cities and towns around Greece turned to self sufficiency. In spite of this, in dire strait, nationalist fervour ran strong. The Hellenes will overcome any hardship God throws at us! Most notably are the contributions of refugees across the Middle East in the rebuilding of the nation, contributing their part in creating a new Hellenic identity. Thanks to this, Greece have had a relatively good recovery, with a recent resurgence in the arts and philosophy. With flourishing ideas come flourishing trade, which formed the basis of the League of Corfu. A direct democracy founded on the basis of the arts, trade and humanity, the League of Corfu strive to one day unite the Hellenic people, and cultivate the beauties of the old world values in a more cynical new world.
Government
The Naxian League is a confederation of city states, with the League Senate and Treasury located in Naxos, though most of the policy decisions are made in Athens. A "federal" direct democracy, suffrage in the Naxian League extend to all adult members of society. Local Areopagus appoints the Archons who are the chief administrators of the cities, while local elections are also held to select the Senators who will sit on the League Senate for a 5 years term, with no term limits (but a 5 year break between every term). The Senate then vote for a council of 12 to the Prytaneis, which is the executive day-to-day show running council of the entire League, whom will remain in their post for 1 year terms, with the chairperson of the Prytaneis, the Hegemon serving as the League's Head of State.
Politics
The political scene of the Naxian League is very divided between city lines. While Athens is the most influential, its Anatolian former colony, Smyrna is on the rise and could potentially usurp it. This divide could be seen in the political alignment of the cities, as the Athenian aligned Western cities are the core base for the Republicans, who push for strong centralisation and government power, while the Eastern islands and Smyrna are the base of the Antonites (named after former Hegemon and founder of the League Antonios Stratotis) who push for the maintaining of the status quo.
Foreign Policy
The League has an openly friendly policy with any neighbouring nations who are not actively participating in human rights violations. This include Heavenly Jerusalem, Albania and the New Hellenic Republic. Trade is heavily encouraged and is the League's main focus, as the spreading of Hellenic culture and art is one of the main goals of the League. Always looking for new partners, the Prytaneis is currently under negotiations with over a dozen cities in line to join the league, as the Naxian League enters its most prosperous era since its foundings.

2020.07.01 14:21 TommyAtkins22456 Where to worship?

I’ve recently (re)discovered Hellenism after about a decade of being non religious. I’m struggling a bit with how to preform rituals and prayers however.
I’ve not told my partner (a-religious but protestant background) about my spiritual reawakening yet and I’m not sure if she’d understand/take it seriously. I understand and accept this as if is a big leap from my pervious a-religiousness and must seem utterly random and far fetched but it has confronted me with a problem.
My issue is that I’ve got no private space where I can retreat to for any form of worship, especially at the moment. I can pray where ever and I get that but I feel it would be more respectful to the Gods to worship in a more regimented way using sacrifices, homeric hymns and possibly an altar.
My question is as follows; is there any way to organize sacrifices without having a dedicated space for it, can I do it on the go/outside?

2020.06.12 04:06 FerretDionysus i hate it, but i'm considering converting back out of fear

for context, i'm still a teenager. i've been going to Catholic school all my life and while my parents aren't explicity Catholic, they didn't really do anything to stop me from picking up Catholic beliefs, to the point where i consider myself an ex-Catholic at this point.
i left Catholicism after discovering that old pagan religions, particularly Hellenism, are still out there and that they just, idk, felt more right than Christianity. i found which gods i worship (Dionysus, Demeter, and Ersa) and i felt more comforted by Hellenism than i ever did in Catholicism. there was always just the knowledge that my gods were there for me
i recently told my parents that i converted, and they, but moreso my mom, got upset. at one point my mom screamed at me while i was making an offering, then followed me to my room to yell at me, and she continually told me that i was going to suffer in hell forever and that she'd be eternally guilty for it while she was in heaven and did i really want to do that to her? all the screaming.. i don't know, broke me? and i said i'd convert back, though she didn't believe me
i don't want to convert back, but i'm now at this point constantly scared. i'm getting desperate to hear from my gods, to hear from any gods. i've prayed to the Catholic god and told Him that i know i have nothing to offer Him but i don't want to make my mom upset. i keep wanting to go back simply out of fear. fear of going to hell, fear of making my mom feel grief over me for eternity. i'm losing sleep, my partner has been falling asleep with me on the phone which helps but i worry i've gotten dependent on that because i can't fall asleep without them, constantly plagued by thoughts of heaven and hell and the afterlife. i keep thinking, if God is a god of eternal, conditionless love, why would He hate me for being afraid, for being gay, for being trans, for, if He is the only god, being wrong about my religion? i try not to hate or speak bad about Him just in case, and i'm trying to be a good person. i don't want to go to hell. i'm just a kid, i shouldn't have to worry about all of eternity. i asked my mom this, the god of eternal love, and she said that it only applies when you're alive and that when you die you're judged and He becomes the god of eternal judgement and that's it, tortured forever. i want to ask some Catholics or Christians about this but i'm scared they'll just repeat that i'm going to hell
sorry this got kind of rambly, i'm scared of her finding this and also i started crying. any advice, comfort, whatever, anything helps, i'm just scared to go through this alone

2020.05.04 02:46 simonjedrew Rip my "Overview of Stoicism" to shreds please :) (PART 1)

Hey all! I currently have this post on my website and I'd love to know what you think of my overview of Stoicism. I've tried to make it in such a way that people can understand it in the context of idea hierarchies. But I understand that this is a difficult task and so I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
ALSO: this is part one because I couldn't fit everything into one post. Look out for part two.
<>
< A BRIEF HISTORY OF STOICISM >
"Man conquers the world by conquering himself." - Zeno of Citium
THE ERA OF HELLENISM
Stoicism began as one of the major schools of philosophy within the Hellenistic period in the mediterranean. For context, Hellenistic literally means “one who uses the Greek language”. This period is marked to have started around the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC and some estimates suggest that it ended in 146 BC following the invasion of the Greek heartlands by Rome., But most people agree that this period officially ended in around 31 BC.
During the Hellenistic period Greece gave rise to the first structures of Democracy and in places like Athens, where Stoicism began, the culture was bustling with new inventions and ideas. It was a cultural expansion unlike any other time in History, and we have that to thank for much of our western culture that we enjoy today.
I have a great interview with Michael Tremblay where we discuss the ins and outs of the Hellenistic philosophies, but for now it’s important to know that this period in ancient Greece was marked by massive advancements and explorations into art, theatre, mathematics, sciences, music, literature and of course, philosophy, including schools of philosophy that you may have heard of like the Cynics, the Skeptics, the Epicureans, and of course, Stoicism, which all belonged to the “Hellenistic” tradition.
ZENO & THE BIRTH OF STOICISM
Zeno of Citium was by all accounts the official founder of the Stoic school of philosophy. The story goes that Zeno was a wealthy merchant who was shipwrecked while traveling to Athens with a load full of purple dye. This was very expensive cargo as this die was extracted painstakingly from sea snails, and it was seen as a symbol of luxury to use such a colour. As Donald Robertson puts it so eloquently, Zeno’s fortune came from and now returned to the sea.
So now Zeno is stuck in Athens. And what does he do? Well the legend goes that Zeno did what any of us would have done; he traveled to the Oracle of Delphi to receive guidance from the God Apollo. There, the Oracle told him that he was to “dye himself with the colour, not of dead shellfish, but of dead men.”
Zeno interpreted this to mean that he should learn from the great thinkers of the past, and he began at once to read about people like Socrates, which is very important to know as the Stoic philosophy is widely considered to be a derivative of the Socratic teachings, especially with his focus on virtue as the main good in life.
And so the legend continues that as Zeno was reading about Socrates, he asked the bookseller, “tell me where I can find a man like this?”. Because Athens was a town full of thinkers and philosophers the bookseller pointed out the window at a man called Crates of Thebes, a famous Cynic philosopher.
Zeno went on to study with Crates for a couple of decades before he started his own school of philosophy in around 300BC on the stairs of a painted porch in Athens called the Stoa Poikile, thus, "Stoicism" is created - a new philosophical guide to the good life.
HOW DO WE KNOW ALL THIS?
We really don’t have many writings from the early Greek Stoics, and it’s not until Stoicism makes its way to Rome that we really start to get some great literature to sink our teeth into. It is, however, important to note that between Greece and Rome there were many notable philosophers who lead the Stoic school and added to the teachings of Zeno, and although we don't have much from the philosophers themselves, we do have enough from historians, like Diogenes Laertius, to put some of the pieces together.
Some of the ancient Stoic thinkers include Cleanthes, the second head of the Stoic school, Chrysippus, the third head, and people like Cato the Younger, who many people looked up to as one of the great Stoics. There were many other notable people who carried the ideas of Stoicism forward or who simply lived as examples of Stoic logic, but for now I'll simply point you to this post by Massimo Pigliucci which will help anyone looking for more detail around the lineage of Stoic thinkers.
One very notable Stoic was Diogenes of Babylon who travelled to Rome in 155BC with other philosophers on a diplomatic tour to spread these Greek ideas to the Roman Empire, which brings us to the most important Stoics that we know today - the Roman Stoics.
THE ROMAN STOICS
SENECA THE YOUNGER
Seneca the Younger was a roman statesman, play writer, investor and advisor to the emperor Nero. Seneca was a confusing fellow because in his writings we see a man who was deeply interested in philosophy and was trying to understand what was real and what wasn't. But his history tells us a story of a man that was also entrenched in scandal, especially seeing as Nero was one of the most tyrannical emperors of Rome and Seneca had such a close association.
Regardless of his many imperfections, one cannot say that he didn’t wrestle with what it meant to live a good life, and that’s why he remains my personal favorite of all the Stoics we can learn from. He truly was a person who may have struggled to live in the way that he taught, and this makes him deeply human. His most popular writings are contained in a book called “Letters from a Stoic”, which is a collection of letters that he wrote to his friend Lucilius on life and how to live it.
MUSONIUS RUFUS
Musonius Rufus is the next of the core Roman philosophers who we can read from today. We don’t have much from Musonius, but what we do have can give us an insight into a man who was very interested not only in the deeper ideas of Stoicism, but also in the very practical day to day application of this philosophy (sometimes maybe too practical). For example, he would discuss the kind of career path a Stoic should choose, or he would even say that a man should not cut off his beard as it is his sign of being a man. Overall, Musonius' lectures are actually quite inspiring and have added to the Stoic cannon quite well.
EPICTETUS
Epictetus started his life as a slave. His name literally translates to “gained” or “acquired”. Later he was freed by his master, who saw intellectual potential in him, and he actually went on to study with Musonius Rufus. Epictetus is widely regarded to be one of the most important Stoic teachers because he taught such practical wisdom with logic and power - a combination seldom found but always well-received. What we have from Epictetus is a collection of discourses that were captured by a man called Arrian of Nicomedia who also compiled somewhat of a “best of Epictetus” called it the Enchiridion, or “Handbook”. This collection of ideas still stands today as one of the Stoic's primary resources.
MARCUS AURELIUS
Marcus Aurelius, influenced by Epictetus, was the last of what is considered to be the five good Roman emperors. He was groomed from a young age - along with his brother Lucius Verus - to be Emperor of Rome, but Marcus’s love of philosophy and understanding of Epictetus’s teachings led him to carrying out his duty as Emperor in as effective and ethical a way possible, unlike many who came before and after him.
As emperor, he had ultimate power, and because of this we are able to see the true power of philosophy, and of Stoicism. As emperor he could have had absolutely anything he wanted. He could have snapped his fingers and summoned anything he liked, including the death of anyone he disliked. But he was a philosopher first, and an emperor second. He was dedicated to living by correct principles, and we can see this in his personal diary which we can read today called “Meditations”. This collection of thoughts from Marcus Aurelius shows us a man who was probably somewhat displeased with the fact that he was emperor. He constantly had people trying to manipulate him, deceive him, and likely kill him. He was faced with every possible temptation, and yet he made sure that the power that he had never went to his head, and that in itself is a near impossible task.
A PHILOSOPHY FOUNDED IN DIFFICULTY
This is a great time to point out that all of these Stoics who I’ve talked about lived lives of extremes. Zeno lost everything in his shipwreck, Seneca was very wealthy and influential but also experienced periods of exile, Epictetus was a slave and experienced exile as well, and Marcus Aurelius had ultimate power which required extreme discipline.
This is a true testament to the fact that Stoicism is a philosophy that was born in adversity and shaped in the mountains and valleys of life. It’s a philosophy that can help us to be effective human beings at any time in our lives. Sometimes your life will challenge, and sometimes your life might be easy, but what Stoicism offers is a guide for how to deal with the highest highs and the lowest lows of life effectively. This is why Stoicism has been cited to have influenced people like Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, James Stockdale, John Steinbeck, JK Rowling, and Nelson Mandela, who is reported to have taken inspiration from the Stoics during his time in jail.
And so here we are in the 2020s still being influenced by Stoicism in our society today and still trying to get to the bottom of just how useful and effective this philosophy can be. Today we look to people like Donald Robertson, Massimo Pigliucci, Gregory Sadler, John Sellars, Ryan Holiday, Kai Whiting, Nancy Sherman, Gregory Lopez, and many other excellent modern thinkers who are carrying Stoicism forward into a new era, and it's up to all of us to learn more about just how effective Stoicism can be as a way of life.
Now let's take a look at what the philosophy teaches!
< FALLING IN LOVE WITH PHILOSOPHY >
"What can guide us? Only philosophy." - Marcus Aurelius
At the core of Stoicism is an unwavering commitment to the discipline of philosophy. Epictetus taught that philosophy's purpose is to "illuminate the ways our soul has become infected by unsound beliefs, untrained tumultuous desires, and dubious life choices and preferences that are unworthy of us." In other words, if life is everest then philosophy is our sherpa.
But seeing that philosophy is actually defined as "the love of wisdom", it stands to reason that the ultimate pursuit for Stoics is that of wisdom. And what exactly is wisdom?
According to Massimo Pigliucci, the Stoics had a two part definition of Wisdom. It is "(i) knowledge of human and divine matters, and (ii) fitting expertise." The Stoics gave us a path to discovering the truth about matters human and divine, and to also achieving the kind of fitting expertise that would make us effective humans, and this is where I present what I believe are the three most powerful questions of Stoicism which align with the three core Stoic studies of physics, ethics and logic:
PHYSICS: What is all of this that we're seeing and experiencing, and what is our place in it?
ETHICS: Based on our answers to the previous question, how should we act?
LOGIC: When thinking about our place in this universe and how we should act, how do we know if we're right?
So as you can see, at the core of Stoicism is a deep desire to decode this very complex landscape that we seem to be moving through. The Stoics asked some of the most important questions of life, but they did so in a practical manner that could help the smartest and the simplest of people alike to live a better life. Because of this, Stoicism offers a low barrier-to-entry guide to understanding some of the most complex matters of life.
But always remember that no matter how many questions we can answer about the universe and how we should live, we must always come back to philosophy, the love of wisdom, with an open heart and mind. This is what grounds us and shows us that no matter how far we push our reasoning capacity and our ability to explore, there is always more to find. There is always a new truth, a new idea, and a new concept to explore, and these truths and concepts are found in no single school of philosophy, religion or way of life. These truths are found everywhere if we look. As Seneca said, “there has yet to be a monopoly of truth, and there is plenty of it left for future generations too.”
So keep on learning and exploring. This is the start of the Stoic way, and In the same way that the grindstone sharpens the axe and makes it easier for the axeman to fell the tree, the love of philosophy is the process that sharpens your mind so that you can face the storms of life with a better traveling partner - a partner who always gives and never asks anything in return.
< THE DESTINATION: A FLOURISHING LIFE IN ACCORDANCE WITH NATURE >
"If a man knows not to which port he sails, no wind is favorable." - Seneca
EUDAEMONIA AND OUR PLACE IN THE COSMOS
After falling in love with philosophy and learning from great thinkers Zeno of Citium came to the conclusion that the ultimate goal of life was to align with nature, which would lead to "eudaemonia" - a latin term roughly translated to "flourishing". And what exactly does it mean to be in alignment with nature? Well, it's an idea that has many interpretations, but here's mine:
In order to understand the idea of finding alignment with nature I want you to consider the lion. We, as observing and thinking humans, look at the lion and study his place within his ecosystem. We're captivated by the lion. His teeth, his mane, his strength, and his courage. But although we like to study the lion, it would be far out to think that the lion is as perplexed about his place in the universe as we are.
See, the lion doesn't think very much about what he should do or how he should do it. He simply knows! As far as we can tell, he doesn't ever struggle with his morning routine, he doesn't sit for hours philosophising about how he should live his life, and he doesn't question what everything around him is or what it all means. And not only this, but there are certain things that, if we saw the lion do, would make us consider the lion to be sick.
For example, should the lion all of a sudden become a vegetarian we would surely consider him to be ill, or out of alignment with his nature as a lion. We would know this because his whole body is a reflection of his unique place in the ecosystem. He's strong, he's agile, he has big teeth and bigger claws. So how could a creature like this not be sick if he were to not eat meat? He is perfectly formed to hunt and eat meat, as far as we can tell.
And by now you're wondering what all of this has to do with the Stoic idea of aligning with nature. The point is that the Lion has a place in the ecosystem just as much as the tree has a place, and the elements in the ground, and the birds, and the ocean, and the clouds, and the rain and the sun and the stars. They all have unique and important roles to play in the infinite scheme of the cosmos. So if all of these things have their own place in what happens, then doesn't it make sense that maybe there are skills (or virtues) that we possess that make us uniquely human and that, if nourished, would allow us to simply and effectively integrate ourselves within the cosmos right down to our own smaller ecosystems? And on top of this, wouldn't there also be decisions that we could make that would seem to take us out of alignment with our nature as human beings, and therefore would label us as ill human beings just as the vegetarian lion is sick lion?
But this idea of aligning with nature doesn't simply apply to how we as a humanity and one species should act, but it also applies to how you as an individual should direct your life. I'm sure you've had moments in your life when you felt a certain pull towards one direction, or maybe you've felt inspired to chase a certain goal that would be meaningful to you. You might be naturally talented at a sport, or even as a mathematician or a public speaker. Whatever your skill or whatever you're drawn to, the correct Stoic approach in my opinion would be to align with that individual nature by pursuing it to the best of your abilities. As you do this you'll find that you can learn faster because you'll enjoy what you're learning, and you'll be manifesting a part of yourself that only you can bring to the tribe of humanity.
Epictetus brought a unique perspective on a life in alignment with nature by teaching what we now call his role ethics. This was his suggestion that we, as human beings, tend to find ourselves in certain roles in our family, community and personal lives, and that if we could fulfil those roles to the best of our abilities then we would be doing society and ourselves a great service. This is an idea that has the potential to face harsh scrutiny seeing as we now live in a society where we have more choice than ever to choose what we do and what roles we play, however I believe that Epictetus’s role ethics can be best interpreted to mean that whatever we do, we should do it to the very best of our ability. This, if anything, is a sign of a healthy human, and as long as we aim at the good (see the next section), then doing our very best at whatever we do simply must be in alignment with nature. After all, it would seem that everything else in the cosmos strives to its highest potential, right? Trees are a great example. They don’t grow and then stop when they’re tired. As long as there is sun, water and nutrients the tree will grow to exactly how big it can grow. So if you’re a father, a mother, a son, a daughter, a teacher, a student, a CEO or a clerk, do your best.
And one final interpretation of the idea of alignment with nature might be best reframed as aligning with irrefutable truths of the world, or things that cannot be otherwise. The Stoics taught, as you'll see soon, that there are things that are in our control and things that are outside our control, and they suggested that if we were to focus only on what is ours to control and to forget about the rest then we could achieve "inner tranquility and outer effectiveness." The things that are in our control are simply our own reactions to events and our rational thinking capacity, but everything else is ultimately outside our control, seeing as we have no immediate power over the world around us. The forces of nature and the world around us are simply doing their thing, so it’s best to align yourself with these things that cannot be otherwise so that you can focus on what can be otherwise - yourself.
These are the types of questions, in my interpretation, that the Stoics tried to answer about life. What is all of this that we see? What's our place in it? How could we act as effectively as possible? How would we know if this is the correct line of thinking? They used logic and reason to make headway on these questions and discovered that we, as humans, might also have a code that would act as a guide to a flourishing life in alignment with the ecosystem we're born into - the cosmos. And now that we have the broader picture of what our aim is, read on to see what I view as the way to the attainment of that aim.
< THE WAY: A LIFE OF VIRTUE >
"Freedom is the name of virtue: Slavery, of vice…. None is a slave whose acts are free." - Epictetus
THE FOUR CARDINAL VIRTUES: YOUR INTERNAL COMPASS
Whether you believe in the conscience or not, we all have moments in our lives when we feel that what we're about to do would be either right or wrong, good or bad. Many of us don't bother to listen to this mysterious guidance, but we can all recognise that it's there and we know that it can be quite loud at times. Socrates, who influenced the Stoic school heavily, spoke about this internal compass. He spoke of it as his own "internal oracle". It was a voice that guided him to do only what he considered to be good and right. Later scholars and philosophers have agreed that what he saw as an internal oracle was not unique to him, but was what we consider to be the conscience. The difference is that he actually listened.
On closer inspection of our own conscience we can see that in moments of intervention we're often being "guided" to be more courageous, to treat our fellow human beings better, to be more disciplined, to stop being weak and arrogant, or to get better information so that we can make more rational decisions.
The Stoics seem to have decoded this conscience, and this is where I present what the Stoics called the four cardinal virtues. Embodying these four powerful virtues, the Stoics taught, would lead you to a flourishing life in alignment with nature:
COURAGE: Strength in face of adversity, bravery in times of turmoil, courage to live by correct principles, courage to love and to trust.
TEMPERANCE: Moderation in consumption, discipline in endeavours, calm in the storms of life, not picking one side or another.
JUSTICE: Correct judgement, understanding of what's right and wrong, understanding of what's good and what's bad, harmony with the human race, to love people.
WISDOM: Sound knowledge, constant education, love of philosophy, desire for correct information leading to correct judgement, rationality.
Can you see how pretty much any situation in your life could be benefited by turning up the dial on any one of these four virtues? This is what the Stoics thought. In fact Marcus Aurelius said that "if you find anything better than that (virtues), embrace it without reservations - it must be an extraordinary thing indeed."
So this is our internal compass. These are the virtues that can make us happy, healthy and flourishing human beings in alignment with nature. It is through the embodiment of these virtues in everything that we do that we can come closer each day to fulfilling our ultimate potential as human beings.
< THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE INDIFFERENT >
"Learn to be indifferent to what makes no difference." - Marcus Aurelius
UNDERSTANDING WHAT'S IMPORTANT
By now we know that we have a destination (flourishing in alignment with nature), we have the way (a life of virtue) and we understand that we must fall in love with philosophy in order to ground our understanding in sound reasoning and education. But there's one more element that we need to know before we delve into some of the more specific and actionable tools and tactics of Stoicism. What we still need to know is what's important, what's not, and what doesn't matter either way.
The Stoics thought about this question and they taught a clear guide to the things that should be important to us and the things that simply don’t matter either way.
THE GOOD
According to Stoics, the only real good is virtue, and therefore the four cardinal virtues are the gold standard for what we should aim at and what is important. Virtue should be our supreme aim seeing as virtue is the only good. And not only that, but a life of virtue is a life that leads to mental and physical health. It's a literal preventative cure for an unnatural and unhealthy life.
But some can misinterpret this and become bothered that “good” doesn’t encompass things like love, family, friendship, financial security, art, and other things that we might consider to be good. But what the Stoics really were trying to do was to look at what the absolute bare essentials were. Sure a friendship could be great, but it can also turn sour. Financial security could be nice, but we really can’t rely on it to bring us happiness, and even then there’s nothing inherently good about a few numbers on a bank balance. Courage, temperance, justice and wisdom will always be good, and there is nothing and no one who wouldn’t be better off after a strong dose of these virtues. In fact, everything that you currently consider to be good would actually be enhanced by the embodiment of these virtues into your own character. So focus on what will make your mind healthy and well, and everything will flow from that effort.
THE BAD
Just as the mountain implies the valley, so too must there be bad as well as good. But what is bad? Stoics define "bad" as anything that is not virtuous, and the simple way that we can decipher this is to look at the opposites of the four cardinal virtues.
So in place of courage, which is good, we could say that cowardice is bad. This could mean shirking your duties, letting your fears rule you, not living up to your best principles or doing wrong because you were too afraid to do right. In place of temperance, which is good, we could say that excess is bad. Things like lust, gluttony, lack of discipline, or over-emotive responses would be examples of this. In place of justice, which is good, we could say that injustice is bad. This means being unfair, treating people with disrespect, having incorrect judgements about right and wrong, or acting immorally. And finally, in place of wisdom, which is good, we could say that ignorance is bad. This would mean choosing to be blind to the facts, living against our better judgement, or not taking personal education seriously.
Can you see how all of these things, if integrated into your life, would be bad for you? And can you see how if you were to live with cowardice, excess, injustice and ignorance you would become a sick human being in the same way that a vegetarian lion would be sick? It would be out of alignment with our nature as humans, and this is why we must move towards the good (virtue) and move away from the bad (vice). But what about the rest?
THE INDIFFERENT
The things that are indifferent are everything that exists outside of virtue and vice. Virtue is good, so we should aim at virtue, and vice is bad, so we should avoid vice, but everything else should be accepted gracefully if it comes and not missed if it doesn't. This is a hard concept for some people to wrap their heads around, but I’ll do my best to explain.
Things like money, nice cars, big homes, prestige, fame, and a lavish lifestyle are all indifferents because they really don't make a big difference in our overall satisfaction unless we allow them to. And this is the key - if you place a high level of importance on these things then they will rule your life and make you happy or unhappy, depending on whether you have them or not. But if you understand, as the Stoics did, that you don't have to be a slave to these foreign desires, then you can flow through life making the most of things as they happen. If you get money, great! If you don't, brilliant! It doesn't matter either way, but what really matters is living virtuously.
And one important point to make here is that the Stoics never said that we should desire to not have these nice things in life. In fact, things like money or a nice home are referred to by Stoics as "preferred indifferents". This simply means that if we have the chance, we would prefer to have them. But even though we prefer to have them we understand that having them will not bring us closer to peace of mind or a true flourishing life.
When you understand that things external to your own mind really only make as much difference as you allow them to, then you're freed to focus on what's truly good, to avoid what's truly bad, and to be happy with and enjoy whatever is served on your plate in the banquet of life.

These were the words of Giacomo Nani, Provveditore general to the Dogado in the year 1790 after inspecting the defenses of the city of Venice, considering them inadequate to defend it from external threats, but the perpetual neutrality of the Serenissima over the years made the Venetians forget the memories of the war of the League of Cambrai of 1508, where Venice found itself surrounded and besieged by four foreign armies and only thanks to the providence of God and the tenacity of the Venetians did the Republic manage to resist and win the war, albeit by renouncing further expansions to the mainland.
Since the events of the Storming of the Bastille in 1789 Venice has kept Paris and France under constant surveillance, thanks to an intrinsic network of spies, ambassadors and French nobles who took refuge in Venice and since the same year the Doge Ludovico Manin did everything to ensure the safety of the Republic and of it’s citizens, modernization of the army and navy began with reforms based on the English model after a stay in London by Angelo Emo, admiral of the Venetian Navy and Francesco Pesaro, Venetian ambassador in London and later Ducal Councilor.
In the following years the Venetian Army took part in an impressive series of military reforms and the use of new military tactics and a reform of the training of recruits, on the creation of special units such as the Schiavoni Veloci used as assault troops and the Navy was also involved in a series of reforms with a modernization of equipment and an opening of the ranks as an officer for those who are not aristocrats, at the same time increasing spending on the military defense of the Republic and the armed forces.
In 1793 with the capitulation and subsequent execution of Louis XVI they threw the Republic into an even more defensive and paranoid state than before, the Kingdom of Sardinia was already fighting the French and the Doge knew that it was only a matter of time before they arrived in Venice, but with the appointment of a certain Napoleon Bonaparte as General of the Army of Italy he changed the cards on the table for the French Republic, winning at Voltri in 1796 and in subsequent battles such as those of Lodi and Fombio, occupying Lombardy undisturbed.
The Doge with the news of the capitulation of Piedmont and the request of General Kerpen to pass through the territories of Venetian Lombardy, in the next few days the Treaty of Vienna is signed in secret, initialed between the Holy Roman Empire and the Republic of Venice on creation of an alliance between the two states and the entry of Venice into the anti-French Coalition, accepting requests to station Austrian troops in the garrisons of Brescia, Bergamo and Verona to stop the French advance, the first baptism of fire for the new Venetian Army took place in Castiglione when a battalion of the Anafesto Regiment took it part, the battle was lost by the Austrians and the Venetians but also demonstrated the efficiency of the previous reforms. Venetian Lombardy resisted until March before being occupied by the French and Italian revolutionaries.
In April 1797 the French troops besieged Verona and advanced rapidly towards Treviso, the Siege of Verona ended towards the last days of March with the capitulation of the Venetian stronghold and the retreat of the surviving wards in Treviso and Padua, days after the Veronese and the ex-Venetian troops, tired of the French repression, began the Pasque Veronesi, which lasted from 17 to 25 April, while Venice was still spared from the war but French ships were ever closer to the port, Le Libérateur d'Italie was sunk by the coastal fortresses of Venice after refusing it to leave the port and the Doge from that moment ordered greater naval activity against the French, in mid-May also Pordenone and Udine will end up under French occupation without even firing a shot. After an emergency session of the Major Council, the vote was taken to move and evacuate the government in the Stati de Mar, under the suggestion of Francesco Pesaro the Doge follows the council and on the same day British and Venetian warships leave Venice for Prevesa, considered a safe haven given the location and good defenses, before departure the Doge Manin gave a speech on the events and fate of the republic, stating that even if defeated and occupied with the help of God and San Marco, the Serenissima will return in Venice, the cradle of the Republic.
After the transfer of the government from Venice to Prevesa the Doge made a commitment to secure the remaining domains of the Republic of Venice, thanks to the English support the local economy did not stop and in the following months a free trade treaty was also signed between the two countries, and the fight against Napoleon even if limited did not stop, thanks to the imposing Venetian Navy and the desire to return to Venice, in 1801 the government decided to move the capital to Zara, considered quite safe and modernized with the construction of new forts to protect it from French ships, the local population will continue to support the government of Venice during this period of exile.
In 1798 the French besiege Malta and after the capitulation of the Knights it is integrated into France, but the Maltese together with the surviving Knights resist the French by mitigating a guerrilla war, while an Anglo-Venetian fleet lands in Valletta to besiege the French entrenched, Gozo was freed by the Fanti de Mar and Royal Marines on October 28 of the same year, the Venetian troops with the British continued to besiege the French until their surrender in September 1800, until the end of hostilities on the island remained a contingent of the Venetian Navy as support for the British. During the Egyptian Campaign, the Serenissima continued to launch naval operations against France to interrupt the French supply lines in Egypt and to cause as much damage as possible to the enemy military actions, in 1799 a French Bombardo fleet and occupied the island of Paxò together at the bombing of Prevesa and Corfù, the Venetians, thanks to the adequate defenses and the presence of Russian ships, managed to get the fleet away from the Ionian Islands in a couple of days. The Venetian Republic also from the same year allowed the British to create a temporary base in Vonizza for the duration of the conflict.
Ludovico Manin will not be able to see Venice freed like many of his fellow citizens, who died of a heart attack 24 October 1802 in Zara in the Palazzo dei Vescovi, seat of government since 1801. Only with his death was the Senate and other offices restored, a Senate was created composed of the main patrician families both Italian, Greek and Slave, reaching 250 seats, Francesco Pesaro was elected with an absolute majority, ex-ducal councilor of Manin as new Doge of the Republic of Venice.
During the rest of the Napoleonic Wars the Serenissima did not participate in any land campaign but with their navy they helped the British to maintain a stronghold in the Mediterranean, in 1807 a Venetian squadron took part in the Anglo-Portuguese fleet to escort John IV and the rest of the court in Brazil, together with a thousand civilians, and since 1808 with the retreat to Cadiz of the Spanish Cortes, a Venetian battalion will protect the city together with the British until the end of the war.
In 1813, after a series of protests by the minorities of the Republic and the adoption of the constitution in Spain and Sicily a year earlier, the Republic of Venice also adopted a new constitution, taking inspiration from the US and Neapolitan Constitutions of 1799, the new the form of government will be the Unitarian parliamentary one, with a Curia composed of an Arengo elected by limited male suffrage and a Senate of ducal nomination and accessible only to noble families or to the high offices of the state, moreover the Doge has the power to appoint the Consul of the Council, which presides over the government formed by him and must be accepted by the Curia in joint session. The old administrative divisions are abolished in favor of the institution of the Provinces, the only territorial body together with the Municipalities and the Dogado which enjoys wide autonomy.
With the defeat of Napoleon during the Russian Campaign and his retreat from Moscow, the Venetian government with the English and Austrian help invaded Istria, freeing it in January 1813 and at the beginning of April the whole Venetian part of the Serenissima was liberated, the Doge Francesco Pesaro will give a long speech from the balcony of the Palazzo Ducale to the Venetians and their determination to resist the French yoke, also praising Manin's firm hand and work in the darkest hours of the Republic and within two weeks also Bergamo and Brescia are freed, the Venetian Army will be part of the Sixth Coalition where it will defeat the French on the Mincio and freeing Milan and Turin together with the Sardinian-Austrians, will also send naval teams to Liguria to occupy Genoa and Nice with the help of the Sardinians.
The Republic of Venice participates in the Congress of Vienna as a winning nation together with the United Kingdom, the Austrian Empire, the Kingdom of Prussia, the Russian Empire and other minor states such as the Kingdom of Sardinia or the Papal State; Doge Pesaro and the Plenipotentiary Minister in Vienna Antonio Primo Capello conducted negotiations for the Serenissima Republic and signed the Congress treaty after its end. From the Congress after long hours of negotiations on the transfer of Venetian Lombardy to the Austrians, a compromise is reached, the territories of Bergamo and Brescia will become part of the new Lombard-Emilian Kingdom and in exchange the Republic will receive Mantua, the Ferrara area and the Republic of Ragusa and Poglizza, in addition to compensation in cash by the Austrians.
With the end of the Napoleonic Wars and the subsequent Restoration in the political scene the Republic saw the beginning of a period of limited democratization with the first political elections after the restoration in 1818, which saw the victory of the liberals and the middle class, supported by the nobility Venetians, but with a large opposition formed by democratic forces and progressives, representative groups of the Venetian proletariat and ethnic minorities also took part in this deployment. New reforms were subsequently introduced, such as the adoption of the Venetian Civil Code of 1821 and the modification of the Doge's office, abolishing the term of office in favor of a 10-year term and the opening to non-nobles of being appointed Doge.
In the following years the Republic of Venice saw a slow but constant economic recovery thanks to the acquisition of new possessions in the Mediterranean and the appearance of the first industries of the Italian Peninsula, concentrated mainly in the cities of Verona and Treviso, but also with the creation of shipyards in Ragusa, Preveza and Spalato, adopting a free trade policy in international trade such as the United Kingdom and also the adoption of a new flag made up of red and yellow bands with a blue canton on the top left with the Winged Lion above holding a Bible and six arrows. Important public works were also started such as the creation of a railway bridge between Venice and the mainland in 1846 and with the creation of the first railway networks of the Republic with Mantua-Venice, passing through Verona, Vicenza and Padua, which began in 1834 and completed in 1846, besides the creation of railway networks the government undertook to create also public infrastructures such as schools, aqueducts, sewers and hospitals in the main cities.
While Italy between 1820 and 1831 went through a period of turmoil and riots the Venetian Republic together with the Grand Duchy of Tuscany had no such problems and Venice became a refuge for many Italian patriots such as Giovanni Mazzini, Santorre di Santa Rosa, Silvio Pellico and other exiles forced to move to the Republic, causing diplomatic wrath not only in Sardinia but also in the Austrian Empire which saw Veneto as a hideout for Carbonari, the government had to submit to Vienna's requests and increase public safety, even if it was done in a formal way.
In 1823 Giovanni Capodistria, count and noble of Corfùùwas appointed as head of the government, during the years of the Napoleonic wars he was director of the Corfu Hospital and in 1813 he was a supporter of the Corfu uprisings for the ratification of a democratic constitution, he was later appointed Senator by the Doge and remained there until 1823 when he was given the post of Consul and to form a government; Koper is considered one of the greatest Venetian politicians of the era thanks to his firmness and to both liberal and conservative ideas, one of his first acts was the financing and supply of equipment to the Greek rebels during the Greek War of Independence, this will also cause an influx of Venetian volunteers into the ranks of the revolutionaries, attracting the ire of the Ottoman Empire which declared war on the Serenissima in 1825, the Venetian Navy then began to actively support the Greeks with the bombing of the main ports of Greece and Egypt when it comes to the field to help the Empire. Meanwhile Prevesa and Vonizza were besieged by the Ottoman Army.
Also in the same year, the Venetian actions and the even more recent Russian actions to send naval squadrons to the Mediterranean also led London and Paris to take sides alongside Venice and Saint Petersburg, in 1827 off the coast of Navarino coalition forces defeated the fleet Turkish-Egyptian and incited by the Cretan revolts the island is invaded by the Venetian forces with the help of the rioters, fleeing the Ottoman forces on the island and besieging the cities of Chania and Candia, while in Morea the Venetian Marina gave support to the French in their invasion of the Peloponnese, the war ended with the Treaty of Adrianople between the winning powers and the Ottoman Empire, the Venetian conquest on Crete was also recognized but only at the condition that the government had put a brake on local brigandage and piracy, in exchange he had to sell the islands of Cerigo, Cerigotto, Pori and Chitra to the United Kingdom, which would become a British colony from the following year.
Greece became a parliamentary republic with a model identical to that of Veneto, and was recognized as an independent nation with the London Protocol of 1832, where Greek neutrality in conflicts and independence was declared, its first president was Theodoros Kolokotronis and as head of government Alexandros Mavrokordatos, the Hellenic Republic became already from the following year an ally of Venice and an important commercial partner of the Republic.
Giovanni Capodistria remained Consul of the Council until 1842, the year of his resignation from political life and where he returned to his native Corfù and died there at the age of 87, after the London Protocol Capodistria became a public figure in the political scene of the Republic and acclaimed by his fellow citizens and by the Greeks as the first who answered the call of the Hellenes, during the rest of his peaceful mandate the island of Crete and began a policy of Italianization and Hellenization of Crete with the reopening of the Orthodox and Christian religious sites, many Turks emigrated from the island to return to the Ottoman Empire due to discrimination by Venetians and Cretans.
After the resignation of Capodistria in 1842 Giovanni F. Avesani was appointed as new Consul, well-known lawyer and noble Veronese until 1848 when he was forced to resign after numerous revolts that broke out first in Venice and then throughout the rest of the Republic with requests for a greater democratization of the Constitution and the change of government, Doge Giovanni Correr also resigns and Giambattista Varè will be elected as new Doge in his place, with his subsequent election the titles of officers to Presidents of the Republic and President of the Council are also changed of Ministers as well as the National Parliament divided into the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. Numerous democratic reforms are launched such as the introduction of universal male suffrage and freedom of worship.
Riots and revolts also occur in other areas of Italy; in Palermo the Kingdom is proclaimed after the expulsion of the Bourbons from the island, in Naples the people invoke the constitution, in Rome Pius XI proclaims the statute and in Turin the King Carlo Alberto proclaims the Albertine statute. On March 18 the Five Days of Milan break out and a providential government is established and both Gabrio Casati and Carlo Cattaneo to the formation of the Provisional Government of Milan send letters with requests to the annexation of the Venetian Republic, but without their knowledge since mid-February the Army Veneto was mobilized and from March 1 is stationed in Verona and Mantua ready to act and on March 20 the Army Veneto invades the Mincio and aims at the cities of Bergamo and Brescia but sends Schiavoni columns on Milan to occupy it before the Piedmontese and there arrive on March 24, the GPM and the Veneto Government give the directives for the establishment of a plebiscite in Lombardy to join it with the Republic and Carlo Cattaneo is appointed General of the Milanese Civic Guard.
The Kingdom of Sardinia on March 25 begins the advance towards Milan but passes from the south to Parma to occupy Emilia and subsequently crosses the Po but is blocked by the Veneto Army which had already occupied the old Austrian positions, the Piedmontese protest but for the moment Carlo Alberto decides to stop to consolidate the conquest and the Austrian Empire declares war on both the Venetian Republic and the Kingdom of Sardinia, the other Italian states also send aid to patriots such as the Pontifical troops of General Giovanni Durando which are sent in support of the Venetian Republic and which are sent to Udine to stop a possible Austrian invasion, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany will send a contingent of regular and voluntary troops commanded by Ulisse of Arco Ferrari to Milan to support the Provisional government, the same did King Ferdinand II who sent an army corps under General Guglielmo Pepe. Already in May there was an Austrian counterattack on Udine and the subsequent siege with the attempt to penetrate the Veneto but failed thanks to the Pontifical reinforcements, the Austrian Army did not send reinforcements until 1849 after subduing the various revolts in the Empire.
But within a few months all the sovereigns who had sent troops began to call them back to avoid being involved in the revolutions and in a possible war on Austria, the Papal troops disobeyed en masse and put themselves at the service of the Veneto Army, the same will be done by the university battalions and the Tuscan volunteers and by the Duosiciliano contingent only Guglielmo Pepe and the learned weapons will remain in Veneto to support the Republic and in the meantime all the sovereigns except Carlo Alberto begin to repeal the recent constitutions, causing even more riots and this cause the escape of Leopoldo II and Francesco V from Florence and Modena respectively, provisional governments are proclaimed both in Tuscany and Modena and Venetian emissaries are sent to start the plebiscites of annexation to the Veneto, in Rome instead the situation is even more dramatic after the killing of Pellegrino Rossi on November 15 in Rome and the next day also Pope Pius XI flees to Gaeta.
Tuscany under Francesco Guerrazzi immediately proclaims the annexation to Veneto and Modena only when the war ends and with a plebiscite, instead in Rome the Roman Republic is proclaimed under the triumvirate of Mazzini, Saffi and Armellini; Mazzini knows that he can count on the Veneto support that already in the previous months had sent spies to foment the riots in Tuscany, Modena and in the Papal States and on the declaration of the Roman Republic the Veneto will send supplies and Austrian war material to the Romans as well as emissaries to start negotiations for the annexation of Rome.
In February of 48 in France the Second Republic was proclaimed after the expulsion of Louis Philippe from Paris, the government of Venice recognized immediately the sovereignty of the new state and began negotiations to create an alliance between the two republics, in May it was created a secret agreement between the two states on the Kingdom of Sardinia; if Piedmont had attacked Veneto, France would have intervened alongside it and in case of victory the region of Savoy would be given to France and the independence of the Pope and the interaction of the Papal States were guaranteed.
In December Lombardy together with Modena and Bologna are officially annexed to the Venetian Republic, causing the euphemism of the civilian population and officially ending the Provisional Government of Milan, Gabrio Casati is appointed governor of the Province of Lombardy on the same day, while Carlo Cattaneo is promoted officer of the Venetian Army and sent to Rome to help the defenses together with Giuseppe Garibaldi, already in the service of Venice since the summer where he was sent with the "Hunters of the Alps" to the Bergamasco to stop a possible Austrian invasion from Tyrol. The annexation of Lombardy generates a series of dismay and criticism about Carlo Alberto and the already bad Piedmontese adventure, where many officers and aristocrats harshly criticize the choices of Piedmont during the war, but many others together with Carlo Alberto are satisfied with the annexation of the Parma.
The following year in the spring of 1849 the Austrian Empire finally permanently suppresses the Hungarian revolt with the help of Tsarist Russia and finally prepares the forces to invade Italy and occupy the Lombard-Emilian region, the Austrian General Staff also proposes an invasion of Istria and Dalmatia which were left unguarded and with few men in its defense and in June the Austrian Army began military operations with the massing of troops in Trentino commanded by Radetzky and in Croatia under the command of d'Aspre. On 17 June Austria declares war on Veneto and on 20 Austrian departments invade Dalmatia while Radetzky had already started operations on 19 with the sending of Hussars across the border; the few Venetian garrisons mount strong resistance against the Austrians but futile since they do not have the opportunity to receive reinforcements or help, d'Aspre will capture Obrovazzo on June 25 and July 7 arrive at the gates of Zemonico near Zara, and the other part of the Army sent to Spalato and Sibenico is blocked in Canina by members of the local National Guard and by Schiavoni divisions.
A small Navy fleet in the following days is sent to the Gulf of Trieste to destroy the Austrian fleet deployed there, on 12 July the Battle of Trieste is fought, the Venetian squadron will be able to destroy a large part of the fleet but not without significant losses caused by the ships enemy and from coastal fortifications, this operation is considered a success because until the end of the war the Austrian Navy will not do any military action, leaving the Adriatic in the hands of the Venetians but also with this victory the Venetian Army cannot stop the Austrian advance although it will send reinforcements to Dalmatia and Istria to strengthen defenses. On 9 July Zara is besieged and on 14 Sibenico with Spalato on 19, all three cities have good defense systems and are supplied by the Venetians by sea, the Ragusano and the rest of the territories of the Republic are safe from Austrian aims for the impossibility of advancing further, Radetzky instead in Trentino struggles to advance due to the Italian resistance and the actions of Garibaldi, who with the use of the guerrilla war stops the Austrians in Val Camonica, subsequently Radetzky tries to break through through the Lake Garda to cause confusion and take the Italians from behind, he will only be able to hold the Island of Garda for a few days before being forced to retire, he will also try to enter via the Friulian Plain and will be able to break through it, reaching up to Udine and to the occupation of the Carnic Alps before being defeated in the battle of San Daniele del Friuli and at the end in the last days of July the Emperor called his troops after the conclusion of negotiations between President Daniele Manin and Chancellor Wessenberg-Ampringen, with the armistice of San Daniele del Friuli concludes the Austro-Venetian War momentarily, accepting the transfer of the Lombard-Emilian by Austria and the transfer of Dalmatia with the city of Sibenico by the Veneto, Istria and the other regions remain in the Venetian hands as they are considered of little value. The Armistice of San Daniele was ratified with the Zurich Treaty in 1850.
The Venetian Republic emerged from this war both defeated and victorious, having conquered Lombardy and the whole of the north-west, while in Turin King Carlo Alberto has been under pressure for days by generals and the court to attack Venice now that it is exhausted by the war and take advantage of it to conquer Lombardy and Romagna, and on 1 August the Kingdom of Sardinia invades Lombardy both from the west and from the south across the Po, the Savoy troops struggle to advance and the Veneto Army with the help of the volunteers manages to go behind the enemy lines through the Modena area and conquer Parma. At the same time, on August 1st, the French Army after the news of the war between Sardinia and Veneto invaded Savoy, left unguarded and by July 7th the whole region was conquered, riots also broke out in Genoa, Carlo Alberto to not lose the throne asks the surrender of the war immediately, the armistice was signed in Vignale which would put an end to the war between the new king Vittorio Emanuele II, Daniele Manin and Luigi Bonaparte with the transfer of Savoy to France and Tunisia and Parma to Veneto.
In the same year in Italy the reactionary forces regained ground with the occupation of the Roman Republic by Duosicilian, Spanish and Austrian contingents, in addition to subsequently a large French contingent under Oudinot in 1852 after the establishment of the Second French Empire by Louis Napoleon , the Venetian Republic will eventually have to give up the unification to incorporate only the Lombard-Emilian, Romagna and Lucchese in the Veneto state, and the patriots will realize that only with the intervention of a foreign power Italy can be united under one nation, whether it is republican or monarchical. Tuscany was occupied by the Austrian and Papal troops following the restoration of the Grand Duke by the moderates of Tuscany and the Municipality of Florence, Guerrazzi, Montanelli, Mazzoni, had to take refuge in Veneto where they were welcomed, together with them many other patriots found refuge in the republic like Guglielmo Pepe, Francesco Crispi, Giovanni Mazzini, Aurelio Saffi and Lorenzo Pareto, this influence did not stop for several years and already in 1854 in Lombardy there were about 15 thousand Italian exiles from all over Italy, many of them were intellectuals or patriots but others even bourgeois disillusioned with Italian absolutism and confident of the republican government.
With the incorporation of the new territories in the Venetian Republic the need to give a new name that was suitable to represent the whole national territory, at the end after several parliamentary sessions it was decided to change the name from "Venetian Republic" to "Lombard Republic" .
In the subsequent elections of 1850 Manin was appointed President of the Republic by Parliament and the left-wing coalition, formed by the Republicans, Mazzinians and liberals, managed to win most of the seats and the coalition appointed Carlo Cattaneo as their candidate who was appointed Prime Minister on February 12, 1851, the Cattaneo Government in the following years launched important reforms such as a school reform based on secularism, extensions to the ports of Ragusa, Canea, Ravenna and Viareggio, to the modernization of the railway system which in 1859 covered the entire territory of the mainland and an administrative reform that introduced a federal system, using the Swiss and US models as a model.
The federal reform of Cattaneo provides for a transformation of the entire state and a constitutional change; the old administrative divisions were abolished to be replaced with the Regions, administrative entities with self-government on regional policy and with an autonomous fiscal policy or fiscal federalism, they are examples of presidential democracy where the inhabitants of this region vote for the General Assembly; a single-chamber parliament composed of locally elected members and where they also vote for the President of the Region, elected by male suffrage at each election, he remains in office for 7 years and can be re-elected twice, the president has the competence to form a regional government and the General Assembly has the power to dismiss the President and call for new elections. Below the Regions there are the Districts, the second administrative level of competence of a city, it includes the rural and city territory but does not have real political powers and have a purely statistical and elective value, under them there are the municipalities, each Municipality has a public office called Mayor or Podestà depending on the state and is directly elected by male suffrage for those who are 21 years old, and in most cases also has competences in the surrounding countryside. Finally there are the Autonomous Municipalities and the Dogado of Venice, they are Venice, Spalato, Zara, Prevesa and Vonizza, administratively they are on a par with both a State and a Municipality at the same time, they are directly managed by the municipal authority and elect a Parliamentary representative. With the new system, the Federal Parliament will be divided between the General Council, the lower house of parliament composed of members elected by male suffrage and uninominal college and double election round and between the Senate, the upper house of parliament composed of representatives of each Region. and Autonomous Municipalities, they are voted directly by the General Assemblies and each region has the right to elect two members and the autonomous municipalities only one representative, the federal parliament has a duration of 5 years.
The Regions at the vigil of the Cattaneo reform are 14; Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia, Romagna, Lucchese, Istria, Ragusano, Ionian Islands, Venice, Spalato, Zara, Prevesa, Vonizza and Crete. The regions also have the possibility of adopting one or more regional languages which have the same competence as Italian, and they are Lombard, Veneto, Emilian, Romagnolo, Tuscan, Istrian, Dalmatian, Croatian and Greek. And they are teachers at school as a secondary language like French.
Subsequently Carlo Cattaneo remained on the political scene as a parliamentarian in the left coalition, voting against the Cavour government, later becoming professor of law at the University of Bologna in 1857 and then rector of the Polytechnic of Milan from 1863 until 1868, at the same time he will also be director of "Il Politecnico" until 1862.
While the Lombard Republic initiated extensive reforms, the other Italian states returned to absolutism, and the last monarchy that repealed the constitution was the Kingdom of Sardinia, in 1850 the imminent signature of the Treaty of Paris for the Sardinian-Venetian War, the Subalpine Parliament refused to sign the peace treaty twice, at this point King Vittorio Emanuele declared the Moncalieri Proclamation, where he invited the voters to vote cautiously but again the parliament had a left majority and at this point the King dissolved the Parliament and repealed the constitution, returning to the absolute monarchy and eventually signing the Treaty of Paris.
The repeal of the Albertine Statute caused a brain drain from the Kingdom of Sardinia where important leftists and intellectuals both republican and moderate emigrated to the Republic and among these names such as Nino Bixio, Urbano Rattazzi, Camillo Benso of Cavour and many other Piedmontese stand out. Cavour in particular will become a famous figure in the political scene, already an important statesman and economic theorist in the Kingdom of Sardinia. In 1854 he became the new President of the Council of Ministers, when in the previous elections the right wing formed by the liberals and the nobility won the elections. Already immediately Cavour set to work to show the world and Italy that the republics were not the lair of revolutionaries and that Lombardy was the only nation in Italy to be modern, dynamic and industrialized on the peninsula.
Cavour also used realpolitik to increase the chances of unifying Italy, receiving the English foreign minister Lord Palmerston in Venice in 1858 and the French ambassador Jules Baroche in 1855. In 1853 due to disagreements about the protection of Christians and who had to protect them between the French Empire or the Russian Empire, the republic declared itself neutral but already the following year the British and French asked the government to take sides with the forces of the Agreement against Russia, Cavour was in favor of the alliance but hesitant because of the good diplomatic relations with the Tsarist Empire, he finally accepted under the condition that France and the United Kingdom guaranteed the integrity of Lombardy from a possible Sardinian or Austrian attack and in 1855 the Corps sailed from the port of Venice of the Lombard Expedition with an infantry division also composed of Bersaglieri and Schiavoni and a Cavalry regiment, for a total of 10 thousand men commanded by the General Manfredi Fanti. Lombard troops landed on 8 May in Balaklava, the expeditionary force had lesser tasks than the English and French ones but it distinguished itself in the Battle of the Cernaia, where units of Bersaglieri and Fanti de Mar together with the Ottoman and French troops managed to fend off Russian attacks all day.
The negotiations began as early as 1855 and in the spring of 1856 the Paris Congress was opened with participants from the Second French Empire, the United Kingdom, the Ottoman Empire, the Lombard Republic and the Russian Empire and gave Cavour the opportunity to put internationally and diplomatically the Italian Question, and to prove to the world that the Lombard Republic is not an anarchist and revolutionary state, but a liberal, industrial and modern one where Nobility still exists. In fact, an English officer comments on the visit to a Lombard camp; "In my surroundings I see soldiers of all kinds and every race among Italians, Slavs and Greeks, I even find Turks converted but the most amazing thing is the high presence of nobles and aristocrats such as Count Alessandro Capodistria, son of the famous Capodistria or the Duke Lodovico Melzi d'Eril, I must say that this republic is quite strange. 2020.04.12 09:30 luka-exe Discovering my Patron Deity (Beginner Hellenic Worshiper)

I have felt a connection to the Greek Pantheon for as long as I can remember, even during my time as a practicing Christian as a child I felt a stronger connection to many Gods than to One True God.
I have sporadically looked further into the belief system throughout my 22 years of life, but in the past year I have taken more of an interest in it. I separated with my partner of almost 6 years and I turned back to belief in order to ease my grief and loneliness.
Over the course of the year I have been comprising my findings in a journal, writing is like a form of meditation and relaxation for me and I like having all my research in one compiled place. A few months ago my journal was damaged, and I have been slowly transferring it to a new journal. I was forced to take a break from my research after another traumatic loss in my life.
For the first time this year I returned to my journal and spent hours transferring information into it when I had the sudden realisation. Strange coincidences had been occurring during the period of the new loss in my life, and I knew it was pointing to a deity sending me signs. I began taking note of all the occurrences to figure out who it could have been.
David Bowie (one of my favourite musicians) would always play on the radio when I felt doubt, imagery of dolphins were anywhere that was important to me, I would often spell frankincense without anyone else around to burn incense or wear perfume, ravens followed me during the hardest moments.
Then I started to realise signs that had been with me for years.
My ability to play musical instruments without much issue, having prophetic dreams, identifying as bisexual, being passionate about writing and poetry.
I realised that I had a deity watching out for me, and that deity was Apollo.
I instantly shot out of bed and offered a stick of frankincense and offered praise and thanks. That one stick of incense burned for almost an hour, when they have never burned for more than half an hour in my experience.
Today I have finally decided to join reddit so I can connect with others of the Hellenic faith, continue my research, and share my experiences since my realisation.
Thank you all.

2020.04.07 22:33 Bevans-12 [EVENT] The Crisis Lingers (I) - Agriculture

The Great Balkan War was won - and the regions of Macedonia and Thrace had begun the slow process of deep integration into the Hellenic Republic. However, now that the Greek people’s desire for revanchism had been temporarily dampened, the Papandreou Administration’s attention turned to resolving the lingering economic issues of the Black Monday crisis. Measures had already been implemented upon the outbreak of the crash, and certainly the mobilisation of industry had helped to boost employment and kick-start the economy again - but these were not enough to resolve the crisis and properly put Greece back onto a path of economic growth and development.
Indeed, an effort to more thoroughly address the crisis had begun to be demanded by the Hellenic people - newspapers began to run stories criticising Papandreou’s ignorance towards the livelihoods of Greeks, and focusing too much on a population exchange. It appeared clear that whilst the measures he introduced did aid in recovering from Black Monday significantly, more reforms were needed.
In particular, the rural communities of Greece called out for action on the unfair practices forced upon them from the landlords that had dominated agriculture for centuries. Financial exploitation and unjust evictions were common complaints, but the whole system of tenant farming that dominated around half of Greek arable land desperately needed addressing. Their complaints extended further than land reform however, with incomes continuing to fall following the Black Monday crisis, and Greek produce being increasingly hard to sell internationally; action was needed to secure the future of Hellenic farming.
Papandreou, together with his Finance Minister Emmanouil Tsouderos began drawing together plans for land reform, in cooperation with representatives from the agrarian community. The State Markets Act and Land Reform Act succeeded only due to the support gained through the governing Liberal Coalition working together with the socialist agrarians - who worked heavily on the land reform measures. Whilst it faced fervent opposition from the People’s Party, it never-the-less passed.

Laiki Agora - State Sponsored Markets

During mobilisation the Hellenic Republic undertook in preparation for (and during) the Great Balkan War, the government instituted a policy of buying a portion of farmer’s produce, to be converted into rations and distributed amongst the soldiers and sailors of the Hellenic Armed Forces. This policy proved to be immensely popular with the rural and agrarian population of Greece, amplifying their income and enabling them to further recover from the crash which so devastated the agricultural sector of the Greek economy. Moreover, in some cases - it allowed them to invest in more farmhands and even new technology to improve the efficiency of their harvests. Thus, the government has announced the extension and expansion of this policy:
  • The policy of buying farmer’s produce would continue as it had been established in war time, with the establishment of new regional markets to facilitate the purchase of a portion of agricultural goods. These markets will be located in the same areas where traditional Greek markets are usually held (Laiki Agora), to increase ease of access for farmers. The state markets will be situated in urban areas with a population exceeding 25,000, to ensure rural farmers have a central location to travel in which to sell their produce. The Ministry of Agriculture will oversee this extensive market programme.
  • Farmers will be paid in either new machinery and tools to increase their agricultural production efficiency, or in raw Drachma. However, the machinery would be worth more than the Drachma offered. The produce will then be sold on international markets, emphasising Greece’s unique agriculture; feta, olives, peaches, grapes etc. to attract buyers. Grain and more generic agriculture that Greece produces will also be offered to its closest trade partners that struggle with feeding their populations; such as the French Republic.
  • From these state-run markets, the Hellenic Government hopes that farmer’s income will further be subsidised, aiding the recovery of their income and produce to pre-crash levels. The Papandreou administration has announced that this policy will continue until June 1937, where it will be reviewed, and either continued for a further six months, or be gradually phased out.

Tackling Land Reform

The issue of Land Reform is an issue that has seriously hampered the growth of Greece’s agricultural sector; much of the arable land is owned by powerful, wealthy landlords who utilise mass tenant farming to make their profits. Black Monday’s particularly devastating effect on Greek Agriculture has once again brought the issue to national attention - with debate raging on the best course of action.
This has re-ignited a long established topic of ideological conflict between the major parties in Greece; the socialist ‘National Union Party’, being agrarian-focused, strongly supports radical land reform to seize land and redistribute it to the wider rural population. In opposition to them is the People’s Party, who hold landowner’s interests close. They say that the current system is successful and fine as is; and strong landowners allows efficient management of agriculture. The governing Liberal Coalition, led by the Prime Minister, lies in the crossfire of this conflict - being pulled either way by the opposing forces.
However ultimately, the agrarian socialists won out - appealing to Papandreou’s social democratic leanings to successfully sway him to their cause. However, he has made the Land Reform Programme decidedly more moderate than the radical agrarians sought - needed to pass the legislation successfully and effectively keep control over his more conservative MPs.
In the ‘Land Reform Act (1936)’ the following measures will be implemented, to better the Hellenic agrarian population - both socially and economically:

  • The most important part of the act will seek to break up large estates of over 500 hectares, which own huge swathes of arable land in Greece - a distinctly rare commodity due to our nation’s rather poor soil. Landlords would be allowed to keep a maximum of 1/10 of their land, with the rest of it being able to be bought by sharecroppers and tenant farmers. This is expected to increase the efficiency of farmland, along with profitability per hectare, by allowing greater autonomy and freedom for each farmer - not being restricted by the single-minded focus on profitability some landlords possess. Thus, while the upfront cost may be great, eventually this will pay off in the form of economic growth through the aforementioned expected results, and thus increased tax income.
  • Sharecroppers and Tenant Farmers would be empowered by the state to purchase the area of land in which they currently farm, with the state enforcing them via the power of compulsory purchase and eminent domain - essentially forcing the landlords to sell their land if the request is made. Furthermore, the land they purchase will have a price limit of ℛℳ 40 per hectare, ensuring it is affordable both for the state and the farmer.
  • They would be able to purchase the land through either their own savings, or low-interest loans distributed by the ADIB (Agriculture Development & Investment Bank), which will be expanded and empowered under the Land Reform Act. The ADIB will be granted an additional ℛℳ 45,000,000 from the central government, to finance this loan distribution. Whilst this is expensive in the short-term, the loans are expected to be paid back by the successful sharecroppers with their own farms - meaning long term profitability. Moreover, the ADIB is to provide further grants of up to ℛℳ 200 upon the purchase of the land to allow new farmers to adapt, and modernise - to purchase new machinery and tools.
  • The reforms also contain crucial regulations to ensure fairness in the future for Greek agriculture - the practice of tenant farming is to be restricted severely, with landlords only able to rent out a maximum of 2/3rds of their total arable land. The Ministry of Agriculture will closely supervise and monitor this - with yearly inspections. Furthermore, the Landlord’s right to evict tenant farmers will be limited - only if there is provable vandalism, or if they have failed to meet rent payments for a minimum of six months.

This policy of Land Reform is to have wide-reaching impact, and fundamentally change Hellenic rural life. However, it is a popular move, which enjoys broad support amongst agrarian communities. It will also be applied fully to the newly annexed regions of Southern Macedonia and Western Thrace - bringing desperately needed reforms to the regions that have been deprived of investment from the Tsardom’s neglectful rule.

2020.03.30 06:08 mr-peaches [SPOILER] Theory on Ben. Unanswered Questions?

I finished the final episode took a drive and one thing bothers me. We never see Ben’s dead body, like his actual dead face. If that’s not too harsh. The scene at the restaurant with Wendy, we see Ben step out of the restaurant, a cut to Nelson across the parking lot, cut. The next time we see “Ben”, is in a body bag getting pulled out of Nelson’s SUV with Ruth and Marty present.
I am rewatching from where Wendy and Ben are at the rest stop when Ben calls Hellen to try and apologize. Towards the end of Episode 9.
Wendy catches Ben on the phone, after a frustrated outburst by Wendy. Ben begins to get upset and Wendy goes to comfort him. Wendy begins to ask out loud. “Where can I take you that you will be safe”, Ben answers “Knoxville”.
My thought as I am rewatching. In the movies and TV shows, where does everyone go when they have to lay low. Mexico, a classic Hollywood cliché. It might be a stretch for me to think Ben is in Mexico, but I do believe that Ben is still alive. I have arguments. Please see below...
Wendy and Ben are eating dinner in the restaurant, before she makes what seems like a decision that will result in her brother’s life coming to an end. Wendy asks Ben. “What do you want,” an eerily similar question that Marty was asked by Navarro earlier in the season when he was a prisoner of Navarro’s in Mexico. A connection to Navarro and Mexico.
Ben answers the question saying that he wants Ruth, dogs, a house, a GARDEN, and a job. Ding ding ding, if you haven’t made the connection. I know a crazy old lady with a nice big garden. Who seems to be in quite good terms with a emotionally confused/confident Ruth by the end of episode ten. Foreshadowing that maybe Ben will get what he wants.
It is never clearly shown or stated how Nelson finds out where Ben is at. After the phone call that Ben made to Hellen at the rest stop, Wendy snapped the phone in half. Can we say that would have been the extent as to where Hellen would be able to track Ben?
Wendy has her breakdown in the van after leaving the restaurant and calls Marty. She cry’s to Marty that she can’t do this. Again, it is never clearly stated or shown what in fact “this” is. It is only implied, implied that she gave up Ben herself to be killed.
When Ruth and Marty are cremating “Ben,” Ruth ask Marty how they found Ben. Marty says that Ben made a mistake when he called Hellen. Marty lies for Wendy, on the implication that Wendy set up Ben. As there would have been no way for Hellen to track Ben from the rest stop to the restaurant. As the phone was broken at the rest stop.
Here is my theory.
Wendy didn’t call Hellen and give up Ben. Wendy called Navarro. Wendy explained the situation to Navarro, he decided to help. He knew the only person that really wanted Ben dead was Hellen. At this point maybe Navarro already had made his decision on Hellen, or maybe a private phone call with Wendy helped him reach that decision.
Nelson answers to Navarro, we know this from the time Hellen asked him if he would “let her know” if the phone call ever came for her own life. Which we find out he did not let Hellen know. Navarro gave the order to Nelson to take Ben. Take Ben where, that’s where things get a little foggy. I am not exactly sure, but I have a theory.
When Wendy leaves Ben at the restaurant table. She gets in her van to leave the restaurant. Minute mark 56:26 in episode 9. The license plate is a Tennessee license plate. Can we say, at the bare minimum, they made it out of Missouri? Maybe Ben and Wendy made it to Knoxville, maybe Nelson got Ben either settled in with the people he knew in Knoxville or possibly got him to Mexico. A place where he would be safe.
Why Navarro would do this for Wendy. I am not sure. Maybe it could be because he had already made his decision on Hellen, and sparing his soon to be new partners close brother can be seen as a kind gesture. A kind gesture that could asked to be remembered in the future.
I realize it can be argued that this can all be disproven by the conversation that Wendy has with Navarro in the middle of episode 10. I like to think it could be a ploy cooked up between Wendy and Navarro to make everyone think Ben is dead, more importantly make Hellen think Ben is dead. Wendy had been getting more confident when speaking with Navarro, almost like they truly are partners instead of her working for him. Or as he put it, him owning her.
To me there weren’t enough concrete actions or words given to say that Ben is for sure with out a doubt dead. They built too much up between Ruth and himself to have him just be done. I have a feeling we will meet Ben again.
What do you think? Some one had to have noticed that we never saw Ben’s physical dead body, we only saw a zipped up body bag.
TL;DR: Wendy and Navarro are working together behind the scene. Ben is still alive and will be apart of the future plot.

2020.03.15 06:15 TOXIC_OMG_REPORT Lux in Tenebris - An expansion mod

Hi! My name is Helena, main developer and creator of Lux in Tenebris, an expansion mod for EU4.

More than a year ago some friends and me were in a crave to play Beyond Typus, a fantastic mod surely many of you know already, but with the release of BT 10.0 we thought that the province density was a *bit* too much for our more vanilla tastes. Starting as a mere personal, humble project to update BT 9.0 to the current version of the game, we started what would become Lux in Tenebris.
Merely a couple weeks after we started, we started thinking 'what if we add this new idea, or change this other event, what if we add some more provinces to this region'. Soon we realized that we were doing something else than just updating Beyond Typus 9. As a result, after more than a year and a half, we're in a state where we have far surpassed the original Beyond Typus 9.0 in scope and ambitions, giving birth to Lux in Tenebris.
The intent with the mod is to have a massively improved EU4, but within the guidelines and gameplay rules on which the base game runs. We want to give players a choice between the (in my personal opinion) insufficiently detailed vanilla game and the extremely detailed mods such as Beyond Typus.
We look for a balance between expanding and overhauling systems of the game while maintaining the mod simple enough that AI can perfectly play it and players don't feel overwhelmed. Player agency is a very important part of our design philosophy and is always present behind every decision.

1) Lucille Grace 2) Mikael Jonathan William 3) Raphael Leopold 4) Ariel Eden 5) Samael Gray
We are working on a third girl name, as triplets and twins run rampant in my family!

2020.03.07 16:08 spookykitcat Help identifying a deity

Hi there, I have been practicing Hellenism for a little over two years now and have come to a point where I can't find the information I need so I thought I would ask you guys. I am a devotee to Apollon, Hades, and Hermes, but recent events have led me to wonder if another deity is reaching out. I have had this reoccurring dream for most of my life, I am traveling to an island through a forested body of water, when I get to the island I find a castle that once belonged to my family but something resides in the castle, ancient, powerful, and a little unsettling. This dream is often accompanied with fog and bleeds into my waking world. Furthermore, any time I practice divination or reach out to my deities I find my house gets foggy and I can't break the barrier. My partner suggested this may have something to do with the fates as I have Roma heritage and have always been exceptionally good at divination, as well as often just know information that there would be no way for me to know. They suggested the fog could be an indication of this the other possible option we have consider is that this could be Hecate. I am skeptical to say it is Hecate as I know she is very direct in her approach to potential followers, but cannot find enough information on the fates to determine if I am connected to them. Any advice or thoughts would help. Thank you

2020.02.29 09:20 OneSpookySneakySquid [DIPLOMACY] Athens to London

Seeing as 66% of the Cypriot population has voted in favor of enosis with Greece, we would like to work with the United Kingdom to move forward with the process. As previously agreed, the United Kingdom will be allowed to use the islands southern port, and we look forward to increased cooperation with our British partners on this matter. We have several proposals for the British government that we believe they may be interested in.

Joint Naval Base

As we shift the island of Cyprus to Greek administration, and your government sees the need for the continued use of Cyprus' southern port, we propose the establishment of a joint naval base. We can construct the base, and reserve a portion of it for our British counterparts, and we are open to building the necessary facilities right next to the southern port the British intend to keep using. With Britain's great naval history and experience, we believe activities such as joint patrols and joint training exercises would be highly beneficial.to the Hellenic Navy as we continue to expand it.

Preventing Inter-Ethnic Violence

Although the Turkish population on Cyprus is a minority, they are still a sizable amount of the population of the island, and tensions between Greek and Turkish Cypriots are as high as ever with the recent referendums. We propose a joint Greek-British task force be established during this transitional period which will act as a peacekeeping force to prevent any ethnic conflicts on the island.
As for political representation, we will aim to establish a dialogue with the Turkish minority on the island in order to facilitate a smooth transition and satisfaction of the Turkish minority. We will bring Turkish community leaders and activists to the table to construct policies and procedures to ensure that the voices of Greece's Turkish minority are heard.

Erste Geschichte
Zweite Geschichte
Dritte Geschichte
Vierte Geschichte
Sechste Geschichte
..........
N-te Geschichte
..........

https://preview.redd.it/prg5nt5jzig41.jpg?width=790&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b72174438ee559080574da2b88db1e5c5de94d9d

Was habe ich an jenem Zeitpunkt vom Schicksal erwartet?

Was muss man denn dafür tun?
